UNSW partnership with Gondwana Choirs

Gondwana Choirs and UNSW entered an exciting new partnership in 2017, which saw the Gondwana National Choral School held at the Kensington campus for the first time.

In January 2017, the various ensembles rehearsed in a range of outstanding venues across the campus with participants housed in the recently rebuilt Kensington Colleges. Additionally, two public concerts took place in the Sir John Clancy Auditorium.

Paul Stanhope, Artistic Chair of The Australia Ensemble, was program director for Gondwana Composer School, a unique opportunity for emerging composers to develop their craft at National Choral School. Composers were challenged to write a piece in 5 days to be performed by one of the ensembles at an inhouse concert. Paul mentored each composer through this process and impart invaluable knowledge on choral composition.

The partnership engaged several units within UNSW, including Venues and Events, the colleges of UNSW Student Accommodation, School of the Arts and Media in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and of course the Music Performance Unit. Even in the hottest weather which Sydney could muster, the National Choral School was a great success at UNSW in 2017.
