Experience Mindfulness through Art and Music

Mindfulness Artwork 1080x1080

Immerse yourself in a transformative journey of mindfulness and creativity with an upcoming event presented by UNSW Culture, UNSW Psychology & Wellness, and UNSW Health Promotion Unit! This curated experience at 1:30pm, 25 March 2024 at the foyer of Sir John Clancy Auditorium, is structured in two parts, aiming to enhance mental health and wellbeing through guided creative discovery.

Part 1: Engaging the Senses

Presented on Holi, the Hindu celebration of colour, students will be invited to sit or lie quietly beneath the 24-meter tapestry, “Banner” by Mona Hessing in the foyer of Sir John Clancy Auditorium, enveloped in a South Asian live music performance. With guidance from a mindfulness specialist, participants will be encouraged to observe the intricate details of the artwork and surroundings while focusing on relaxation and deep breathing.

Drawing from the theory of colour harmonization by Australian Modernist painter Roy De Maistre, students will delve into the relationship between colours and music notes, enhancing their sensory experience. Through guided mindfulness practices, students will explore the textures, colours, and emotions evoked by the artwork and music, fostering a deeper connection with the present moment.

Part 2: Exploring Conversations through Art

The second part of the creative journey involves a unique opportunity to engage in introspective reflection, imagining a conversation—real or imagined—while expressing it through continuous line drawings on A3 paper. These drawings will then be shared within the group, creating a collaborative artwork and collective story that transcends the boundaries of colour and sound.

By juxtaposing the colourful saturation of the mindfulness session with the simplicity of black and white drawings, students will explore the multifaceted ways in which art can evoke emotions and foster connections. This innovative event promises to be a transformative experience, offering students the tools to enhance their mental wellbeing through the power of creativity and mindfulness.

Don't miss out on this enriching opportunity to explore the intersection of art, mindfulness, and mental health. Join us for an unforgettable journey of self-discovery.
