Introducing MPU's new Music Engagement Assistant, Skye Beker

Joining the UNSW Music Performance Team is our new Music Engagement Assistant, Skye Beker.

Skye has previously been working within the Centre for Ideas team at UNSW, and is excited to be combining her love of engaging events with the world of music.

Outside of her work at UNSW, Skye is an actor and a singer. Skye trained at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where she received a BA in Acting. Since then, Skye has been lucky to be a part of many exciting productions across film, television, theatre and musical theatre.

Q&A to Get to Know Skye:

What are you looking forward to most in this new role?

I am so excited to work with all the talented musicians, and to be surrounded by music

Outside of the Music Performance Unit, you are also an actor and a singer! Tell us a little about your love for performing arts. Do you have any standout projects that you have worked on?

I have a BA in Acting from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and have been lucky to be a part of many incredible productions in my career.  A highlight was being in the cast of the Australian Premier of Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 at Darlinghurst Theatre Company in 2023. There is nothing that compares to the experience of performing live, and sharing that magical space with an audience.

Are there any favourite pieces of music that you have and want to share?

As a vocalist myself, a lot of the music I listen to is usually very singer forward - but for a slight change, I have been LOVING Jon Batiste's Beethoven Blues recently.

What do you love about Sydney? Any hidden gems?

My favourite thing about Sydney is our beaches, we are so spoiled! In terms of hidden gems, I think one of the best toasties in Sydney is at Barbetta in Paddington - it's not even on the menu, you order it from the front cabinet. They use provolone instead of standard cheddar, which is really what makes it sing.

What’s one thing on your bucket list you hope to check off soon?

I am getting married in October! I am in the depths of wedding planning, which is exactly as stressful as everyone says! But it's all falling into place now, and I can't wait for the day to come.
