Willgoss Choral & Instrumental Prizes
For 2022, Richard and Sue Willgoss have generously continued their support of the Willgoss Choral & Instrumental Prizes.
The Willgoss Choral Prizes were established in 2016, and the Willgoss Instrumental Prizes two years later, to award $1000 the best student musician in each of the Music Performance Unit’s four community ensembles – Burgundian Consort, Collegium Musicum Choir, UNSW Wind Symphony and UNSW Orchestra. The winner is selected through demonstration of a high level of commitment, performance and ensemble contribution, and being a current student of UNSW in any discipline.
From 2018, a further prize of $250 was added to be awarded to a member of each ensemble with the same criteria, but without the requirement of being a current UNSW student. This provided the opportunity to acknowledge the considerable contribution of those in the ensembles program of UNSW who are from the broader UNSW community as well as those who are current students.

Richard Willgoss was a member of staff of the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at UNSW for thirty years, and continued on as a Visiting Fellow for several years while undertaking a Bachelor of Music at UNSW. As an undergraduate music student, Richard joined the chamber choir, the Burgundian Consort, and has remained a member for over ten years. During his time with the Burgundian Consort, Richard has specially written some delightful and comedic works for inclusion in the choir’s annual evening recital, and has shown great fondness for his fellow singers. He continued with postgraduate music studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, but has remained a most loyal member of the Burgundian Consort at UNSW.
The thanks of all involved in the UNSW Choral and Instrumental Programs is extended to Sue and Richard Willgoss for their support and generosity, and acknowledgement of the value of music to the UNSW campus community.
