This April, the UNSW Orchestra and UNSW Wind Symphony take the spotlight with Stage to Screen, a celebration of everything from legendary video-game soundtracks to beloved showtunes and the sweeping scores that bring stories to life. We had the chance to catch up with Alana Gao, our newly appointed 2026 Concertmaster, to chat about music, leadership, and what she’s most excited to play.
Tell us a bit about yourself!
I’m a second-year engineering student majoring in robotics and mechatronics, but music has always been a huge part of my life. I started violin at age six — it was my birthday present — and never really stopped! In 2018, I completed my AMus, and since then I’ve been lucky to compete internationally: I took part in the Zhuhai International Mozart Competition in 2019 and placed 3rd in the International Grumiaux Competition in 2020. I love playing in ensembles because you get to connect with the people around you in such a unique way. I still play chamber music and occasionally perform at charity concerts too.
Do you have a favourite musical highlight?
Definitely performing Hubay’s Carmen Fantasy with my high school orchestra. That piece means a lot to me, and sharing it with so many close friends onstage made the moment even more special.
What excites you most about becoming concertmaster?
It’s such an exciting role because the concertmaster sets the tone for the entire orchestra — from bowings to leadership to the energy I bring into every rehearsal. It’s a big responsibility, but I can’t wait to contribute both musically and as a leader.
Anything in the Term 1 program you’re especially keen for?
Honestly, I’m excited for all of it! The repertoire is a bit different from what I usually play, which makes it even more fun. I think the orchestra is going to have a great time bringing this music to life.
