A Stellar Symphony, Australian Elegance, and Choral Majesty: UNSW Concerts Delight Audiences

The past two weeks have been an extraordinary period for music at UNSW, with three captivating concerts that not only showcased exceptional musical talent but also took audiences on remarkable journeys through the cosmos, the spirit of Australia, and the grandeur of Mozart.

UNSW Orchestra - Cosmic Cycles: A Space Symphony

The UNSW Orchestra's performance of Henry Dehlinger’s Cosmic Cycles: A Space Symphony on Friday 26 July under the direction of Dr. Steven Hillinger was nothing short of a celestial experience. This work, commissioned by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre merged live orchestral music with breathtaking visualisations from space that were provided by NASA. Each movement of the symphony, from the powerful The Sun to the expansive Echoes of the Big Bang, captured an awe-inspiring experience for the audience. The orchestral textures were rich and evocative, perfectly complemented by the stunning space imagery.

UNSW Wind Symphony -  Native Winds

On Tuesday, July 30th, the UNSW Wind Symphony, under the direction of Paul Vickers, delivered an exhilarating performance that celebrated Australian music. The concert was a vibrant showcase of local talent, with each piece highlighting the unique spirit of Australia.

Ernest Quah, Rehearsal Assistant and percussionist, states “With the largest audience turnout we have ever had, the Native Winds concert was an unforgettable experience that brought together music lovers from all walks of life.”

This concert was also a celebration of the brilliance of UNSW alumni, showcasing the world premiere of Bryony Pyke’s Jacaranda and Logan Birchall standing as trumpet soloist throughout the concert. Pyke’s composition vividly brought to life the beauty of the iconic tree, with its twisted branches and soft purple petals. The piece was a delicate and evocative portrayal of nature, reflecting Pyke's deep connection to the natural world. Logan’s playing added a brilliant touch to the concert, demonstrating his exceptional skill and musicality, also reflecting his ongoing involvement with the UNSW community.

Collegium Musicum Choir - Lacrimosa

On Friday, August 2nd, the Collegium Musicum Choir and Orchestra, conducted by choral director, Sonia Maddock, presented a soul-stirring evening with performances of Mozart’s Requiem and Vesperae solennes de Confessore.

Both the performance of the Requiem and the Vesperae solennes de confessore were impressive and moving, capturing the depth and emotion of Mozart's compositions while showcasing the choir's precision and dynamic range. The soloists—Brianna Louwen (soprano), Ellena Hicks (alto), Richard Butler (tenor), and Aidan O'Donnell (bass)—were also exceptional, their voices blending beautifully with the choir.

The concerts overall not only highlighted the exceptional talent within UNSW but also offered a profound and enriching experience for all who attended. Stay tuned for next term as we continue to endeavour to bring our audiences more delightful musical experiences.
